Resolution of ‘National Round Table on Public Relations’

1. Recent corporate high profile frauds involving crores of rupees have generated a significant decline in peoples trust in corporates. Public Relations as a strategic management function was also a party to the disinformation campaign to keep the stake holders in the dark. Therefore the round table felt the need for Ethical and Moral Values in disseminating public information.

2. Against this background, the delegates at length discussed the state-of-the-art Public Relations and identified its positive and negative areas and came to the conclusion that the distinguishing trait of Indian Public Relations is the quantity of Public Relations personnel rather than the quality of the profession. It is therefore resolved that the need of the hour is professional excellence to meet the needs of both national and global public relations.

3. The Golden Triangle Public Relations Model based on Trinity – Professionalism, Ethics and Spirituality involved in the backdrop of Indian culture is considered as New Mantra for professional excellence in Public Relations in Public Relations. Other professionals like Journalism, Marketing, HR also can follow this Mantra to suit to their requirements.

4. The Round Table debated the question how to promote professionalism and recommended that Academic bodies, PR Professional Associations, In-House and external PR firms should promote professionalism through engines such as PR education, induction & in-service training, PR Research, Accreditation etc . Similarly individual PR practitioners must aim acquiring professional qualifications and other qualities.

5. The Round Table felt that ethics is a missing link in the discipline and urged that PR Professional bodies should evolve a code of ethics and professional standards for members to practice public relations with integrity, truth, accuracy, responsibility, and high professional standards. Public Relations ethics and Corporate ethics must go hand in hand.

6. Mere professionalism and a code of ethics alone cannot deliver public relations services effectively, unless the public relations professionals change themselves and adopt spiritual values such as love, compassion, tolerance, purity, fellow feeling, patience, spiritual service etc.

7. The Mount Abu Public Relations Declaration concludes “Where the Golden Triangle PR Model is implemented in letter and spirit, there emerges professional excellence; where Public Relations as a strategic management function promotes two-way communication process between the corporate world and its publics, a better world is created with peace, happiness and prosperity.

The above National Conference was facilitated by BK Sushant, National Coordinator and BK Shantanu, Headquarters Coordinator of Media Wing of Brahmakumaris. Mr. K.Srinivasan, CEO of Prime Point Chennai, has webcasted the entire National Conference LIVE.

The dignitaries who graced the occassion were Mr Ramakant Inani, Chairman, PR Committee of Fapcci; Mr Harischandra Prasad, Senior Vice President of FAPCCI (Presided); Mr Devulapally Amar, Chairman, Press Academy of Andhra Pradesh (Chief Guest); Dr CV Narasimha Reddi, Founding Member, GFPR; Mr M B Jayaram, the Golden Triangle Awardee for 2008-09; Rajayogi BK Karuna ji, Founder President, GFPR; Mr K Srinivasa Reddy, Secretary General, Indian Union of Working Journalists; Mr R Sailesh Reddy, CEO, Zee 24 hours news; Sis BK Radhika, incharge of Nagarjuna Management Centre, Hyderabad. Speakers from both Print media and Electronic Media were present. Each speaker spoke on each angle that can contribute to election broadcast/telecasting. Speakers opined, media can contribute a lot to a society. It can change opinions because they have access to people and this gives it a lot of strength. This strength can either be used constructively by educating the people or it can be used destructively by misleading the innocent people. Power of the media can transform the whole society, it can also be used as a 'weapon of mass destruction' .

Speakers pointed out that the Media is a business today like any other business. The credit for the change in reporting goes to the owners of the media houses straightaway. They are to be blamed .Journalist are no more free to express their views on issues, people, parties but do what is told to be done. Instead of taking one individual to discuss media must focus on individual issues to discuss . Journlists should not be influenced by any other elements except truth and just truth while reporting. Two hours or so passed without leaving the audience uneasy and impatient but brought fruitful messages that can linger in the minds of professionals who were present till we met again.

1. National Communication Policy must be evolved as to inform, educate, and motivate people from grassroots to the national level as partners in good governance.

2. Village Panchayats should be made nucleus for dissemination of public information as to cvoer 100 crore Indians instead of 30 crore people being reached in urban areas.

3. Effective implementation of Right to Information Act and Citizens Charter should be implemented in letter and spirit to meet citizens' information needs and improve public service delivery system.

4. Ethics and Spirituality should be made as part of good governance as Mahatma Gandhi used to say to mobilize spiritual resources of the people in the service of the common good of all. A pre-requisite for good governance is transformation of individual in the organization to reach its goal. This is possible only when the mind, the body and individual consciousness support the characteristics good governance.

5. Adoption of ITM Theory of Gandhian Public Communication with combination of traditional media with modern mass media as an ideal media strategy for our country. As Gandhiji made use of the media to mobilise public opinion against the British, the corporate India too must use interpersonal media, traditional folk media and modern mass media to educate both urban and rural people.

6. Though Women in India constitute 48 per cent of total population, they become neglected half in media as pointed by P.C.Joshi Committee. Known for harmony and persuasion, women must be given due representation both in communication system and media as motivators for good governance.

7. Evaluation and Feedback Information Mechanism must be institutionalized to assess the pulse and reactions of the public to the implementation of good governance and also to make midcourse corrections in policies and programmes of the government and corporate India.

Assurance on behalf of Government

The Minister for IT & Communication, Youth Services & Sports, Govt of AP, Sri R.Damodar Reddy assured that the resolutions would be considered by the Government and that efforts will be made to evolve a communication policy to reach the people at the grassroots level.

Seminar on Values and Challenges before Media

29th July, 2007 at Shanti Sarovar, Academy for a Better World, ISB Road, Gachi Bowli, Hyderabad

"Challenges change but values must remain constant. Being the Fourth Estate (the other three being the Judiciary, the Legislature and the Executive), Contemporary Media bodies and individuals have to develop a positive thinking within themselves to justify themselves as the watchdog of democracy and to ensure social responsibility."

This above statement was the sentiment echoed by many a expert during a half-day Media Seminar on "Values & Challenges before Media", that was organized by the Media Wing of Rajyoga Education and Research Foundation & Brahma Kumaris, Shantisarovar at Hyderabad on Thursday, 29th July, 2007.

Speakers on the dais including Dr C V Narasimha Reddi, Director, Information & PR (Retd), Government of Andhra Pradesh, said that Media in country's pre-independence era, especially the print media, was patriotic and missionary in character. However, the present-day scenario depicts increasing incidence of vested interest, commercialism, consumerism, sensationalism, sensualism, yellow journalism, political patronage and bureaucratic interference.

Requesting the Media to evolve a 'Code of Conduct' for self, speakers opined that some degree of self-regulation on the part of the Media is highly desirable. The experts stressed that the character and content of the message being communicated to the public must be in consonance with the rich cultural heritage, values and ethos of the society. In this context, one of the speakers felt that Corporates running Media outfits must de-link their other businesses from Media and let it be an independent identity.

Talking on the importance of spirituality for the Media, Rajyogini Sister BK Kuldeep Ji, said, "The world is becoming a global village, but the distance between our lives is increasing day-by-day. Let us get together to bring about hearts closer through positive thinking and rise above the pulls and pressures of personal, professional and public life."

"Shivam" The Benefaction and "Sundaram" The coverage of the truth has to be nice and beautiful. "And this is where spirituality or the beauty comes into picture," said Shri Karuna.
